Coming Home for September: The Belizean-American Guide to Staying in Belize City

There is a particular feeling that comes in late August, when September is close enough to smell. It happens to Belizeans living in New York, in Miami, in Houston and Los Angeles; a pull toward home that gets stronger every year. The flags going up along Freetown Road. The smell of rice and beans and stew chicken coming from somewhere you have been dreaming about since last September. The sound of music before you even land.

If you are a Belizean American coming home this September, you already know what this month means. This post is for you; specifically about where to stay in Belize City so you can enjoy all of it without the stress of logistics getting in the way.

Why September in Belize City Is Different From Every Other Month

September is the emotional center of the Belizean calendar. Three major events happen within three weeks of each other, and taken together they represent something that does not exist anywhere else in the Caribbean.

St. George's Caye Day on September 10th commemorates the 1798 Battle of St. George's Caye, when Belizean settlers and their enslaved allies defeated a Spanish naval fleet and secured Belize's future as a British-protected territory. It is a day of parades, patriotic music, and genuine pride; not the manufactured celebration of a tourism board but the real thing, felt by people who understand the history.

Independence Day on September 21st marks Belize's independence from Britain in 1981; the culmination of a long journey toward self-determination. The official ceremony, the flag raising, the crowds gathering in the streets; this is what you come home for.

And between them, on Saturday September 5th this year, is Belize Carnival. More on that in a moment.

Where to Stay: Why The Palms Kings Park

The Palms Kings Park is a 12-suite boutique hotel in the Kings Park neighborhood of Belize City. We are not a large resort. We are not a budget guesthouse. We are the kind of place where families coming home for September feel comfortable; enough space to breathe, enough quality to feel like a proper stay, and a team that understands what this trip means to you.

Our suites include private spa bathrooms, full kitchenettes, pool-view balconies, and living room areas. The kitchenette matters when you are in Belize for two weeks and sometimes you want to cook. The living room matters when the family needs to gather after a long day on the street.

We are located in the Kings Park neighborhood; quiet, residential, gated, with free on-site parking. If you are coming home with family from the US and renting a car, this matters more than you might think.

The Connecting Suite for Family Groups

For families coming home with parents, grandparents, and kids all traveling together, our Two-Bedroom Connecting Suite is exactly what you need. It joins a King Suite and a Double Queen Suite through a private interior door; two bedrooms, two private spa bathrooms, two balconies, and two kitchenettes, with the option to move freely between rooms or close the door and have your own space.

It sleeps up to 6 guests. It is the suite that families choose when they want everyone together without everyone being on top of each other. Book it early; there is only one, and September fills before any other month.

Carnival: The One Detail That Changes Everything

Belize Carnival 2026 falls on Saturday, September 5th. The procession route through Belize City ends approximately 5 minutes walk from The Palms Kings Park.

This is not a minor detail. If you have ever tried to get a taxi after carnival ends, or walked 45 minutes back to your hotel in costume while your feet are done for the night, you understand why proximity matters. Our guests walk to the end of the route, watch the final floats pass, and walk back to the pool.

No taxi lines. No waiting. No navigating a city in the dark after a 12-hour day. Just the celebration, and then home.

Planning Your September Trip: What to Know

Flights from the US to Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) run through Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte primarily. American Airlines, United, and Southwest have the most connections. Book flights as early as possible; September is peak demand for Belizean-American travel and seats fill fast.

We recommend arriving no later than September 4th if you want to be settled before Carnival on the 5th. Staying through September 21st gives you both national holidays plus the week of events in between. That is 16 nights; long enough to see family, make it to the beach at least once, and do the celebrations properly.

If 16 nights is too long, a 10-night stay from September 5th through 15th gives you Carnival, St. George's Caye Day, and time for a day trip to the islands or the ruins.
